As much as I love hooking rugs, teaching rug hooking and sharing this amazing art with everyone. I also believe in supporting other artist and craftspeople and by helping them share their talents in another art form with the rug hooking world. That is why on our website you will find other artists and their designs that have been adapted for rug hooking and seeing what you all do to make them your own. All our designs are hand drawn on natural linen backing, monk's cloth or rug warp by request and sizes can be enlarged or changed to fit your need. Thank you for visiting and happy hooking!

Star Island Designs

Star Island is one of nine islands of the Isles of Shoals located seven miles off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. In the 1600’s Star Island was the busiest fishing port on the East coast. In the 1800’s, artists, writers and intellectuals flocked to the Oceanic Hotel - one of the last of the original Grand Hotels. For the last 100 years, Star Island has offered an all-inclusive summer camp experience for families and a wide variety of themed conferences and personal retreats. Whether you find yourself mesmerized by the sunset in a rocking chair on the porch, exploring Gosport Harbor in a kayak, or learning about their innovative environmental programs, Star Island is unforgettable and will call you back time and again. For those not yet fortunate enough to attend our Annual Star Island Rug Hooking Retreat, put it on your “not to be missed” list, (go to our EVENTS page for more information). Unfortunately, like so many small organizations, Star Island has been impacted by COVID-19 and decided it was not safe for guests and staff to open for the 2020 season, which of course impacted their operating revenue drastically. Many who regularly attend retreats on Star Island want to help ensure its continued operations, rug hookers, artist and other groups are coming up with creative ways to support Star Island, so that we can all enjoy it for many years to come. Star Island Corporation and the artists of the works below, have been given us permission to adapt their artwork into designs for rug hooking of which 100% of the profits will go to Star Island. Visit https://www.starisland.org to learn more.

All the designs are approximately 22 X 30” in size and price is $85 per design. Thank you for your support and please feel free to visit www.starisland.org.

Coni Brown Designs

Coni was an amazing, whimsical artist who’s work I discovered on a trip to Florida and though we were only able to meet via email and Facebook, I was looking forward to meeting her on our next trip to Florida.  She was excited for me to introduce her work to the rug hooking world with patterns for everyone to enjoy. Sadly I never got to meet Coni in person, as she contracted a virus and passed away suddenly, too young and much to soon.  From communication with her husband, I learned she was a lively, vivacious woman, who lived everyday with spirit and freedom.  I am honored here at Red Horse Rugs, that her husband has given me exclusive rights to interpret her art into designs for the rug hooking and to help her creative spirit live on thru her art, in rug hooking. I am sure you will enjoy hooking her designs of happy, tropical images that are sure to make you smile. Coni’s husband Stan thoroughly enjoys the photos of finished hooked rugs I send him. When finished if you could send us a photo of it to share with her Stan, we would be most grateful. “If you are lucky enough to live by the sea, you are lucky enough.”

MaryMats by Mary Ploughman Jones - Prince Edward Island, CA

Mary’s love affair with wool and the "joys of hooking" began in 1989, which have a lead her on a wonderful journey of self expression & ”painting with wool”. Mary teaches & demonstrates primitive style rug hooking and continues to learn from other teachers. Her rugs "reside" worldwide with sales primarily from gallery shows, exhibits and commissions.

Mary continues to "grow" her original, often whimsical designs, inspired by her Maritime surroundings. Favorite hooking expression... she loves to tell the viewers of her works..."Please touch"!

Linda Jacque - Northfield, MA

Linda loves the power of color and the vibration of any given surface she decides to paint on. From whimsy to realistic, She lets blank canvases lead the way. From childhood memories to her surroundings in Western Massachusetts to her travels in Mexico and Italy — painting is a never ending cycle of mystery and discovery. Linda loves adding texture and lively colors to found objects. Especially, things like clay insects to lazy Susans, clocks with funky moon faces, wall pieces, and furniture. A juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen, you can find Linda on Facebook and at fine art venues.
